Loving the Big Apple

semi-overcast 20 °C

Well we've added quite a few more ticks on the sights to see list. Been to Bloomingdales and Macy's, though wallets left relatively unscathed. Fashion du jour is gumboots, of all different colors and patterns, they must be pretty hot, sweaty and uncomfortable to walk round in but I guess it's about the look. Enjoyed Union St Market, a farmers market with the odd colorful character. Grand Central Terminal (never call it station) is huge and simply breathtaking, no photo could really do it justice. Empire State Building, the Flat Iron building, New York public library (where bride and groom having photos). Fav part of the city was Greenwich Village. Had lovely lunch at Hummus place. Would you believe we bumped into someone we knew while strolling along a leafy Greenwich street! Graeme Ashton recently retired from Air NZ properties , and his wife, very small world and had no idea he was in NY. Did Central Park, strawberry fields, and took the obligatory carriage ride through the park yesterday. The day started off fine but the wind came up and the clouds multiplied so quite cool in the afternoon. Highline park was quirky, had lunch in a place more French than you'd find in France. Headed off with our New York Yankees caps to the ball game! Simon disappointed he didn't catch any balls like Brittany did! Very enjoyable watching the game, the rules not hard cos even I understood them. Had a hot dog and ice cream and our Yankee team won 5-3. 27 times world series champs! Took 45 mins on subway to get back, we are locals now, no need for a map and we are helping others out (it's not like we would see them again if we got it really wrong). Bed the wrong side of midnight again.

New York New York

overcast 20 °C

Jet Blue from San Francisco to New York pretty good overall. Of interest they don't come down with tea and coffee cart - they take your order and serve from a tray. Bit different. One of the few airlines in States that dont charge for a bag. 5 and a half hour flight.
On arrival took sky train to Jamaica station. Took LIRR (long island rail road) to Atlantic Ave then NY MTA Subway to Union Station Brooklyn where we are staying. We bought a 7 day pass even though we are here for only 5 Days. $29.00 each, if you do more than 13 rides you're on the winning side, we've done 7 already. Food portion HUGE. Ordered small pizza for quick meal first night - came out looking like size of a car tyre!
Yesterday saw Statue of Liberty, Staten Island, Wall St, Little Italy, glimpsed Chinatown, Katz Deli from Harry Met Sally fame, Bryant Park, Broadway, Times Square and finished with seeing Phantom of the Opera.
This is the city that never sleeps

Alcatraz

sunny 25 °C

Made it to and back from Alcatraz. A must see on the list. Gorgeous weather around mid 20s.
Really easy to get around. We stayed at Millbrae near airport for quick getaway in morning. Hotel Dylan $100 a night has free shuttle, wifi and breaky which is expansive (cereal, fruit, toast, waffles, French toast you toast yourself, cheese, yoghurt, drinks).
Costs $4.25 each to get in to city about half an hour. Costs $2.00 each for each tram or bus ride. Cable car is $6.00 a ride.
Next stop NYC.

Sunny Fran

sunny 23 °C

Packing in the sights over the last two days. Yesterday had a hellishly cold wind that forced me in to shopping for a new windbreaker jacket. After queueing for a bit got mason-Hyde cable car to fisherman's wharf. Stopped off for a hot chocolate at ghiradelli chocolate place just to warm up (yeh right). Checked out pier 39. Lunch review: Bubba Gump - verdict not bad but wouldn't rush back. Highlight: view of dolphins swimming from our table. Today brilliantly warm. Did Farmers market at Embarcadero. Wandered through china town. Came across chinese orchestra featuring Elton Wong we think. Had lunch near Washington Square with lovely bottle of rose - Italian lunch bellisimo. After snooze in park, lined up to get our seats for Beach Blanket Babylon. Review: Well worth seeing, an excellent show that has been running for 38 years. Lots of singing and up to date in jokes very funny and larger than life costumes. Simon spent time at the Apple store (lost and found area for husbands) and got USB cable to add photos using iPad so we can finally show some shots that have taken our fancy.
Ps normal service resumed photos up!

Arrived SFO

10 °C

We miss our business class although managed to get a sky couch. It's pretty comfy. Thanks Yvonne FSM for some treats. Staying near the airport. Had a wander round the local area to get into the swing of local time. Dinner Review: Chipotle - where subway meets taco bell mexican style. Quite healthy, very filling. Heading in to city on BART soonish.
